Currently an important irrigation source, the Asa River Dam is undergoing plans to transform it into a conference centre and resort. Located close to Ilorin, in Kwara State, the dam is close to the Nigerian capital Abuja, and its most populous city Lagos. This important piece of engineering; while not yet fulfilling its potential to create a large amount of hydroelectric power, it has improved water supply to the neighbouring towns and settlements, as well as local fisheries and livestock farms.
The Asa Dam resort will be located next to the current reservoir site. As well as the conference centre, the site is planned to contain hotels and other accommodation, a park, amphitheatre and golf course. A shopping centre and amusement park are some of the other plans in the pipeline for the area. The developers propose to create an international school here, providing good opportunities for local children. The development will span about 1000 acres of land.
